In their new leaflet: "The E.U.: What's In It For You", distributed free to all schoolchildren, there is a section headed: "The E.U. is also good for the U.K. as a whole" and it continues:

The single market allows our companies to operate in a market of over 370 million people. Hundreds of thousands of jobs have been created by investment from companies that see Britain as the best gateway into the single market. The E.U. has helped make Britain safer now than at any time in our history. The E.U. has opened up new opportunities for ordinary people to live, work, study and retire abroad.

2.          Thanks to EU-wide regulations, in the new Millennium we will all benefit from improvements in air quality and action on acid rain. And membership of the E.U. has strengthened the U.K.'s voice on the world stage.

This example of bilge is typical of the Foreign & Colonial Office which is shameless in distorting facts and continually misrepresents reality. 9 out of 10.
